6 Things To Know Before Your First Time Doing White Tantric Yoga

By Kyla Rose Maher

Chances are that if you’re reading this, you’ve already heard some things about White Tantric and maybe even been intrigued enough to sign up. I won’t go into what White Tantric is, or how it works, because you can find that info at the source at  Instead, here are 6 things to know, that you might not be able to find on that website, based on my experiences along with that of many other Kundalini veterans.

1. Dress Appropriately: OK, I think we all know that you’ve got to wear white and cover your head. (ahem, I know an AWESOME company that you can find the highest quality kundalini threads. Just sayin’.) But what many people often don’t think of when picking out an outfit for White Tantric day - is to wear layers. You never know what the temperature is going to be in the facility (or outside if you are attending Summer or Winter Solstice) and you never know what kind of energy releases you might experience. I also suggest reading “3 Tips For Wearing White Yoga Pants”.

2. Don’t Sweat The Partner Thing: I would bet the #1 thing that people get nervous about doing White Tantric is finding a partner. If you have somehow convinced your non-yogi significant other to join you, first, please e-mail me and tell me how the heck you did that, and second, have them read the rest of this article. For the rest of you, I promise, finding a partner is no big deal. Usually a facilitator will announce over a microphone, "if you don’t have a partner, raise your hand." Then you just make eye-contact with someone, sit down, and you’re good to go. You usually get exactly who you are supposed to be with. And if you’re not up for trusting the Universe (that’s fine, baby steps), my advice would be, when the facilitator tells people with no partner to raise their hands, you could keep your hand down, look around the room to see who has their hand up, and once you see a friendly face (although I’m telling you, yogis are all friendly), you could go up and ask them to be your partner. Easy-peasy.

3. Bring Snacks: THIS IS NOT 3HO APPROVED. So be discreet. And make sure you sit near me so I can have some of whatever you bring.

4. Make Yourself Comfortable: Bring a cushion to sit on, maybe 2. You’re going to be sitting all day, so you want to be comfy. Another great tip: neck pillows or rolled hand towels for your knees.

5. Packing: Here are some random things you might want to bring with you: lotion, lip balm, tissues, eye drops, joint rub. But also know, you are staying for a day, not a week! At most White Tantric courses you’ll be instructed to keep the rows very clear, which means getting your stuff out of the way. Yogi Bhajan said, Travel light, live light, spread the light, be the light.”

6. Express Gratitude: There is a ton of work that goes into the tantric undertaking to give you an experience of a lifetime.  Be sure to say thank you to the organizer, facilitator, monitors, and all the volunteers. It means a lot!
